But back in the days when I was a football referee, officiating in the professional game up to the Championship, I could always pass my fitness test (when I wasn’t injured!)

One look at Len told me he perhaps wasn’t seeing what everyone else could see.

No joke, when I heard my name called in Florida back in 2018, to be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Mastermind Event, I assumed I had heard wrong. 

It was back when I was a referee myself and was officiating in the top echelons of football in England, up to Championship level. I had the good fortune to meet him at a training event and then hear him speak at an awards dinner. 

Nearly 30 years ago aged 15, I had a weekend job at BBC Radio London (GLR) answering calls for the phone-ins. I also collected guests from reception & made them a tea, hence I got to meet a lot of well-known stars of TV, film, sport & politics. At 15, that was a real buzz and at school on Monday my mates would want to know who I’d met that weekend!
